Wenjane and Susie’s Sacred Oaks Wedding at Camp Lucy in Dripping Springs

Sacred Oaks does not look like a ballroom that got planted in the Hill Country. It looks like the trees were here first, and the wedding had to earn its place under them. Wenjane and Susie were married here, a same-sex wedding on stone under live oaks in Dripping Springs, just outside Austin.

Adam Grumbo Wedding Films is an Austin studio that also films Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, and weekends that travel. Camp Lucy is close enough for an Austin couple and far enough that the sky still gets dark.

The banner is the empty ceremony before anyone walks: chairs, lanterns on stone pillars, the floral stand waiting, and that oak roof.

That is the room. No walls. Just canopy.

Still 01 is the aisle from the back of the house. Stone patio. Geometric lanterns on the pillars. Guests on wood chairs. At the far end, a floral arch of white and pink, two brides, an officiant in a white stole, the wedding party in dark dresses and dark suits. The oaks take the upper two thirds of the frame. That is the architecture of this place.

Tip the camera and the venue becomes a ceiling. Twisted live oak limbs, a little moss, pale sky in the gaps. Sacred Oaks is not a nickname. It is the room they stood in.

The Hill Country keeps showing up even when you are trying to film people. A nine-banded armadillo works the dry grass like it has somewhere to be. Camp Lucy is still ranch land with a pretty ceremony site on it.

Quiet before the aisle. Navy tuxedo, black bow tie, cedar and a limestone block behind. Dripping Springs light is soft under that cover. The film lets this beat sit.

Then they are together in the same thicket. Lace gown, navy tux, a real laugh, limestone on the left, green close behind. This is the portrait the oaks make when you walk twenty yards off the patio.

Vows under the trees. One bride in the lace gown and veil, one in the navy suit with a white boutonniere, the officiant in black with a white stole and gold doves, mouth open because the moment is doing something. White roses and eucalyptus sit just out of the sharp focus.

In the film a parent talks about watching a child crawl, then walk, then blossom. Another promise in the vows is almost domestic on purpose: exercise together, eat well, choose each other again. Replacing rice with kale is a weird line until you hear it at an altar.

They are announced. Bouquet of red and white. One of them leaves the ground. Bridesmaids in burgundy clap. The floral arch is still there. Guests in the foreground lose their composure in the good way. The oaks do not move.

Inside Sacred Oaks the timber frame does the same job the oaks did outside. High trusses, a chandelier wrapped in vines, glass globes hanging at mixed heights, greenery on the posts. This is where the speeches land and the dancing starts.

At the table: peach roses, greenery, votives, night in the wood windows. A tuxedo and a dark dress lean in. The day gets smaller, which is the point of a long reception.

Outside, the sky goes brown and mauve. An oak silhouette holds the corner. Dripping Springs is close to Austin and still has a sky that looks like this.
