How we actually shoot Super 8

Super 8 here means cameras and stock, not a preset. We keep dozens of film cameras from the last fifty years so a day can have more than one look. Published Camp Lucy notes include Canon 1014 XLS, Beaulieu 4008 mkII, and Eumig bodies. Stocks on that weekend included 100D Ektachrome and Vision 3 in 50 and 500.

Grain, flicker, and light leaks come from the cartridge and the gate. A digital LUT can copy a color grade. It cannot copy how Super 8 handles flare on salt, oak canopy, or red rock. If you want digital-only coverage with a film-look grade, we are probably not the fit.

16mm is the richer analog frame when you want more resolution and still want stock. Published 16mm examples include Red Berry Estate in San Antonio and Nouveau Antique Art Venue in Houston. Hybrid days keep digital as the coverage backbone and weave Super 8 or 16mm through the finished film.

What Super 8 cannot do

A Super 8 cartridge is short. It will not cover every speech, every table, and every hallway walk. That is why hybrid days exist. Digital holds the hours that cannot be missed. Film holds the minutes you will still watch when the kids are older.

We will not promise a Super 8-only archive of an eight-hour day. We will promise that when film is on the camera, it is stock. Ask for packages and say whether film is the hero reel or the texture.

A Super 8 search in Austin often lands on digital studios selling a film look. The difference here is stock. Super 8 cartridges are short. Grain, flicker, and light leaks come from the gate.
